Did you know I have a “Like” page on Facebook?

I’ve started updating it more frequently lately with dinner ideas, and lunch and breakfast too, desserts (of course!), cooking tips, and other food-related stuff. There’s some really useful informaiton there. Click here to see what’s in it and Like it.

For example, recently I’ve had these updates:

What to do with almost smooshy, overripe fruits that no one wants to eat,

An idea for breakfast + See those colorful fruits? They are leftovers from a gluten-free, dairy-free, choclate-free dessert!

A link to a delicious soup I made with odds and ends and leftovers that I found, forgotten, in the fridge,

An idea for a simple dinner with minimum prep time, a classic,

And an apple cake with Calvados. (The recipe is a keeper but had some problems. Fortunately, friends on Twitter helped with some ideas.)

So, visit me there?

I think you’ll Like it.

Hi everyone,
I am so excited to announce the launching of a new happening here on the blog, a “Cake Collection” event.
To start with the right foot, I am also going to attach a giveaway to it. Starting now and ending 3/31, one lucky cake submitter will win a copy of Ray’s Boathouse cookbook. And what a fabulous cookbook it is! (See a recipe and a review of this Seattle famous restaurant here).

So what is “Cake Collection” about?

I am always on the lookout for new cakes because after 5 years of baking a cake every weekend, I am starting to run out of ideas. In general, I am looking for simple cakes, pies, tarts with an oomph factor. It doesn’t have to be a cake you baked this week, it can be “old”, just as long as you have posted about it and there’s a link to it.

Click here to see the cake for the weekend archive.

So how does “Cake Collection” work? How to submit your cake post?

All you have to do is e-mail me with the following info:

* Your name

* Your blog’s name and URL

* A link/URL to your cake post

* The name of the cake

* A picture of your cake (optional)

* Include my blog name – 1 family. friendly. food. – and a link to it: http://www.familyfriendlyfood.com/, in your post

The recipe can be either originally yours or someone else’s as long as you give them credit. If you submit a photo, it has to be yours.

E-mail me to: nurit AT familyfriendlyfood DOT com by Wednesday to be included in that week’s Cake Collection.

Each Friday I will post the submitted cakes with a link back to each participant’s blog post.

So what kind of recipes I am looking for?

A recipe of a favorite/winner/special cake that you have posted about on your own blog. There are no rules really, but I do encourage you to have mercy on the working people and submit a cake that is not too elaborate to prepare. Something simple and stress-free with big flavor is great. Preferably beginner-medium level of difficulty, easy and fairly quick to make, easy to find ingredients.

OK, Ok, I’m joining the revolution. It’s not that I don’t like the idea. I do. But it’s just… at my age… and with all those new technologies… and… trying to keep up to date with all this new stuff… and only 24 hours a day… and it’s 9:57 am and I still didn’t have breakfast.

I heard about twitter for a while now and finally caved in. At a Bigfoot bloggers’ conference, from Bacon is my enemy blogger, my husband’s former boss, and here and there, and all around. My husband was the last straw.

He convinced me (“so what do you think about it?”, “have you decided yet?”, “will you look at it tomorrow?”, “you only have to write a post about it, everything is set up, you don’t have to do anything, just write a post about it”), and literally opened the account for me and set up everything so I now have started to use Twitter, and you are welcome to follow me on Twitter to stay in touch with the latest posts.

Hhhhhhhhhhhu, big breath.

If you are not into Twitter, there are other ways to keep in touch and get updates on my Subscribe page:
* Getting e-mail updates
* Subscribing to RSS feeds (if you are not familiar with RSS feeds, see this funny but good video on YouTube, RSS explained the Oprah way, or a more professional explanation from ProBlogger).
* Read the blog in a news reader.

He is doing a great job playing with the template and moving things around as well as doing all kinds of stuff to attract more readers to stop by and read the posts.

I am very happy to see how in the past 3.5 months since I began writing, the number of subscribers and readers is increasing all the time. If you are into the numbers and statistics, read this post.

2. Poll results.
First, thank you for sharing your opinion by voting. It’s important to me to know that I add value to your reading and cooking time. There are so many cookbooks, food magazines and blogs out there and I would like to give you what you are looking for. I can do that if I know what you want/need.

40 people answered the poll’s question: What kind of recipe do you prefer?

1. Recipes with precise instructions – 52%
2. Recipes with general instructions – 42%
3. I don’t care. I don’t cook much. But if I did, I’d prefer recipes with precise instructions – 5%
4. I don’t care. I don’t cook much. But if I did, I’d prefer recipes with general instructions – 0%

I was a bit surprised by the results. Why? Because today most cookbooks tend to write recipes so detailed, trying to be so exact, that sometimes it takes me more time to read the recipe than do the actual cooking. Because this is the trend and main stream of current cookbooks, I was expecting more readers to vote for #1.

With 42% preferring recipes with general instructions and 56% looking for more accurate ones, the results are pretty close.

So I’ll tell you what’ll do. I’ll continue as I do now, giving more details when I think it’s important – like with a specific technique, and being more general when it’s not – like when using spices and seasoning (since everyone has a different taste). Sounds good?

Any feedback is welcome always (e-mail me or post a comment).

There is a new poll (see on the right side) – please vote for that one as well. Thanks.

3. Blogging for the Seattle P-I
I began blogging for the www.seattlepi.com newspaper as a reader blogger (for free, of course). Almost same posts as in 1 Family. Friendly. Food., with an added good feeling that my blog is being published in an online newspaper.
Click here if want to see it.

4. A reminder.
If you like this blog, tell others about it?!
If you don’t, write to me and tell me why?

I love to read and buy cookbooks and food magazines (it’s my addiction), kitchen equipment and tools (no more room in the kitchen cabinets), and browse through food websites and blogs (it takes a lot of my time). But most of the people I personally know don’t care about these things and I guess that most of the people out there don’t care much either. Why do I say that? Well, for starters, because a best-selling cookbook in the US where more than 300 million people live, according to Wikipedia sells only about 1 million copies (for example, click here). That’s all?

So, this is a sort of a mission statement for this blog, dedicated to the people who…

Don’t like to cook
Don’t know how to cook
Whether they like to cook or not, they would be happy if they didn’t have to cook at all
Are fantasizing about having a personal chef
See cooking as a burden or a chore (I confess, sometimes I do too)
Don’t care much about food beyond for their survival
Order pizza, take-out, or eat out more than three times a week
Have only salt, pepper and maybe dried oregano or cumin in their spice rack
Will never own a chef knife
Have no more than 1-3 cookbooks
Don’t glance at a food magazine when standing in line at the grocery store
Don’t aspire to make more than mixing yogurt with muesli for dinner (I have a friend like that)
Are singles or families too busy to cook every day (I know plenty of those)
… in general, don’t claim to have an obsession with food
(Did I forget to mention anyone?)

Well, this blog is for you.

I will only post here recipes that work, are easy, taste good, use basic ingredients and techniques (well, at least I’ll try, but if I won’t, I’ll show you how to do it), or in 2 words – Unthreatening , Delicious.

I hope I’ll make you cook more and love it too. OK, at least like it.

With love, Nurit

PS – 1 Family. Friendly. Food. is entering its fourth month of existence! Yay!

I got some good feedback from readers so far, but I would love to hear anything you want to say so I can do a better job. E-mail me: chef AT wflavors DOT com, or post a comment (you can comment anonymously if you prefer that).

A few people told me that they do not know how to subscribe to the blog.

Here is an easy explanation to those, like me, who are just learning how to do this blogging thing.

Step 1 – you click on a link. A new page opens. You only need to read what’s in the yellow area at the top of the page. The blog is reffered to as a “feed“.

Step 2 – click on the “subscribe to this feed” link.

Step 3 – a small window opens. Click the “Subscribe” button.

That’s it!

(E-mail me if you have any problem with this process chef@wflavors.com)

1. Click here. You will see the following page:

2. Click on “subscribe to this feed”.

3. Click on the “Subscribe” button in the window that opens.

Notes:

If you want to read the feeds, you have several options:

* in your Outlook Inbox (under RSS Feeds)

* in the Browser (click the star button in Internet Explorer, then choose Feeds)

If you are among the smart ones who know all about blogs, you can use the other options on the right hand side of the blog to add this blog to your Google or Yahoo! homepage, or to a number of other Blog aggregation services, and you don’t really need to read this post, right?

Good luck!

Nurit
