You may send me your lettuce. :-)
I am having terrible luck with mine. First, cutworms ate half of my seedlings. Then, the ones that were left have been swiss-cheesed by the slugs. The weather has been awful here, and everything is taking forever to grow. :-(

Another thought on trying to foil the beer stealing squirrel- a piece of chicken wire or bird netting over the top of your butter tub. If you staked it down really well, it might keep them from pulling it up. In the past I've used non-alcoholic beer (it's all we ever have) and it worked. I don't do beer traps anymore because our slug problem is so bad that it gets too expensive to keep buying beer just for that purpose. Now I'm testing some spray made with cinnamon oil that I got at the nursery (I thought it might last longer than the iron pellets, which I go through fast). Mixed results so far.

Yeah, local beer, I just thought about it this morning ;-)
Still need to go out and check on today's status.
Suburban Cowboy suggests to put a rock inside the container.
Why didn't you take the caterpillars out with your fingers?

So the beer didn't work? Maybe they didn't like the kind you bought. Try a local Seattle brew. The slugs are more familiar to locally raised hops then foreign hops. Just a theory, I have no idea. I'm just glad we killed 5 caterpillars even though we resorted to chemicals.

That is some seriously delicious looking pasta! And maybe that's the best trick of all -- stealing the greens away from the slugs before they ever have a chance to NOM on it! :)
