Easy like Sunday morning | 1 family. friendly. food.

Funny hairdos…

It’s my father’s birthday today. He’s 62. Still in the hospital, his days are numbered. 5% chances of going back home.

I want to share a song that he and I once sang together. My one and only karaoke incident. This was when I was a 20 something and single and came to visit him, about 10 years ago… We were in a Mexican restaurant and I had too much margarita so I felt brave enough to try and sing this song that I really liked. I haven’t actually knew the words to the whole song, I just knew that I wanted to be “easy like Sunday morning”. Needless to say, I was terrible at singing. I thought it would be an easy song to sing… Wrong!

So my father came to my rescue and sang beautifully. He is very musical. I snuck back to my chair and watched him. At the end, everyone cheered for him.

This event came up to my memory yesterday after getting the bad news about his current condition, and I looked up the lyrics. I find it amazing that each time I listen to it and read the words I understand it differently. A dad leaving his girl… a person wanting to be free to do his thing… a dad dying and leaving the world again… trying to do the right thing but knowing inside it’s the wrong choice… the pain of staying, the pain of leaving, the pain of living… and choosing freedom above all, at any cost…

Easy, The Commodores

Know it sounds funny
But I just can’t stand the pain
Girl I’m leaving you tomorrow
Seems to me girl
You know I’ve done all I can
You see I begged, stole
And I borrowed

Ooh, that’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning

Why in the world
Would anybody put chains on me?
I’ve paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be
What they want me to be
I’m not happy when I try to fake it!
No!

Ooh,that’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning

I wanna be high, so high
I wanna be free to know
The things I do are right
I wanna be free
Just me, babe!

That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
Because I’m easy
Easy like Sunday morning
Because I’m easy
Easy like Sunday morning
